What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are hypoallergenic, titanium restorations that mirror the function of natural tooth roots. Once set into the jaw (near your missing tooth), your bone integrates with the implants’ surface to fuse it into place permanently. A fully integrated implant can last for the rest of your life.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are titanium roots, that are replaced with in the jawbone to resemble a tooth or group of teeth. A screw is inserted through the gums and into the jawbone. A porcelain crown is then attached to the screw to become the new tooth or teeth. They can be used to support dental prosthesis including crowns, dentures, and bridges. Today’s treatments are so natural looking, no one will know you had surgery. There’s approximately a 95% success rate for all implants. With modern advances in dentistry, some implants can be restored immediately with life like all-porcelain crowns. For more details ask your dentist.

Best Missing Tooth Replacement Options In Santa Rosa

Implants
Bridge
Teeth

Single Tooth Replacement:

Missing teeth affect everything around them. The bone in that area shrinks, the adjacent teeth drift out of place, and even opposing teeth start to wear abnormally. Replacing a missing tooth in a timely manner is essential for preserving overall oral health.

Many of our dental implant cases involve single tooth replacement. The dental implant itself replaces the root of the tooth that is missing. Once fully integrated, we affix a custom ceramic crown that matches neighboring teeth. The final results are like having a natural tooth all over again.

Multiple Tooth Replacement:

Do you have several teeth in a row that need to be replaced? A pair of dental implants can support a multi-tooth porcelain bridge, instead of placing individual implants and crowns in each of those locations. Implant-supported multi-tooth restorations are both successful and cost-effective.

Full Mouth Rejuvenation

Do you need to replace all of your teeth at once? Are you considering a teeth-in-a-day type of procedure? Instead of placing multiple individual implants, we can pair them together to restore your overall smile in a predictable, comfortable manner.

Dental Implants FAQ’s

Want to replace your missing teeth with dental implants in Santa Rosa, California? You probably have several questions. Read the FAQs section below from Santa Rosa Dentistry and Implant Center to be informed before the procedure.

01

A dental implant is a three-piece component used to replace one or more missing teeth. An implant is a small screw-like but strong post made from biocompatible metals or ceramics. The implant is surgically placed in the jawbone, and above it, we attach an abutment that connects the implant to the dental prosthetic.

The final component of the dental implant is a natural-looking crown for a single tooth or denture or bridge for multiple teeth. The final restoration becomes the visible and functional part of the implant.

02

The dental implant procedure takes several months, but it’s worth the wait because you get something close to the natural tooth you lost. After a comprehensive examination, the dentist surgically places a titanium post into the jawbone.

The implant is then left for four to six months to merge with the jawbone through osseointegration. After fusion, the dentist places an abutment through a minor surgery. The final step is to cap off your implant with a crown, denture, or bridge.

03

The actual dental implant surgery is not painful because we use local anesthesia to numb your gums. We also use sedation dentistry for dental-phobic patients for added comfort.

04

Dental implants offer several benefits, including:

  • Enhanced self-confidence
  • Natural-looking appearance
  • Restored oral function to nearly 100%
  • Durable aesthetics and function
  • Easy maintenance
  • Stabilize nearby teeth from shifting
  • Versatility to replace one, several, or all missing teeth
05

Once we replace your missing tooth with an implant, maintenance is critical for the long-term success of your restoration.

Long-term care for implants include:

  • Brushing your teeth twice daily
  • Flossing at least once every day
  • Seeing a dentist every six months for routine exams and cleanings
  • Wearing a customized mouthguard if you brux teeth
  • Avoiding using your teeth as tools to open packages
  • Eating a dental-friendly diet
06

Although dental implants have a remarkable success rate, they can fail. The common reason many implants fail is the infection of the gums and bone around the implant. Also called peri-implantitis, implant infection occurs due to poor oral hygiene and poor habits like smoking.

The other causes of implant failure include poor placement, failed osseointegration, nerve damage, and rejection by the body.

07

You are eligible for implants if you have one or more missing teeth. However, you must have a healthy bone to qualify for implantology. But don’t worry if you’ve lost your jawbone to tooth loss or gum disease. A bone graft can help stabilize your jawbone to support an implant.

Besides jawbone density, ideal features for potential candidates for dental implants include:

  • Optimal oral health: Candidates should have good oral health, free from issues like gum disease or untreated tooth decay. You should also commit to good oral hygiene for a successful dental implant treatment
  • Good overall Health: Generally, healthy individuals are better suited for dental implants. Conditions like uncontrolled diabetes or certain autoimmune disorders may affect the healing process
  • Non-smokers: Tobacco products can affect the healing process of implants. Smokers should quit the habit entirely or until the implants heal
