What exactly is a dental implant?
Dental implants and natural teeth are structurally alike. Both have a crown and root—the only difference is that one is natural, and the other isn’t. The dental implant is a titanium (sometimes zirconia) fixture anchored in the jawbone—the same area your tooth used to be. The implant post is created from a biocompatible material that fuses with your jawbone over time to form an unbreakable bond.
The dental implant remains buried in the jawbone and only becomes visible during dental X-rays. The dentist adds height to your implant by attaching a small metal connector called an abutment. This small metal piece juts out of the gum line to link with the replacement teeth.
Our dentist restores your implants with some of the most natural-looking restorations. Whether it’s a crown, denture, or bridge, your restoration is crafted with high-quality materials and excellent artistry to look and function like your natural teeth.
Dental implants are titanium roots, that are replaced with in the jawbone to resemble a tooth or group of teeth. A screw is inserted through the gums and into the jawbone. A porcelain crown is then attached to the screw to become the new tooth or teeth. They can be used to support dental prosthesis including crowns, dentures, and bridges. Today’s treatments are so natural looking, no one will know you had surgery. There’s approximately a 95% success rate for all implants. With modern advances in dentistry, some implants can be restored immediately with life like all-porcelain crowns. For more details ask your dentist.
What can I expect from the dental implant treatment?
Here are the easy steps of replacing your teeth with dental implants.
- Consultation: Your treatment begins with a comprehensive dental exam using digital X-rays, 3D scans, and photographs. The dentist examines your oral health, including your jawbone, to ensure sufficient height and width to support your implant. Patients with severe jawbone loss may need bone grafting to rebuild their bone structure.
- Treatment planning: After consultation, the dentist devises a treatment plan to determine the number of implants required, location, restoration type, and supplementary procedures needed. Like any successful project, implant planning is crucial for the treatment success.
- Implant surgery: The dentist will numb your gums with local anesthetics for a comfortable experience. However, we understand that not all patients are equal. If you need help remaining relaxed during your treatment, talk to Dr. Sutton about sedation dental care. Once you are at ease, the dentist will place the implant fixture precisely in the jawbone. The implant is carefully placed to ensure optimal alignment and functionality while avoiding damage to the nearby nerves, sinus walls, and other delicate structures.
- Healing and fusion: Your implants will be left to heal and fuse with the jawbone for the next 4-6 months. This phase requires optimal oral hygiene to maximize healing. Furthermore, avoid smoking and honor your follow-up dental appointments.
- Abutment placement: Once your implant biologically fuses (osseointegrates) with the jawbone, you’ll visit our office for abutment placement. This procedure is minor and requires about two weeks of healing.
- Restoration: The dentist takes digital scans of your implant to create a restoration that fits seamlessly over it. After restoration, your brand-new tooth looks and functions like natural teeth. It doesn’t move, slip, or affect your natural speaking ability.
