Are you considering dental implants but have concerns about the recovery process? You’re not alone. Many patients are curious about what to expect after the procedure, including any potential downtime and soreness. At Santa Rosa Dentistry and Implant Center, we aim to provide you with a clear understanding of the dental implant journey, from placement to full recovery. Read on to learn about the recovery process and get answers to your most pressing questions about dental implants.
The good news is that the recovery time after dental implant placement is minimal. While the implant will need several months to fully integrate with the surrounding bone, the immediate recovery period is typically brief. The bone where the implant is placed doesn’t have many nerve endings, so you won’t experience significant discomfort post-procedure.
Most patients experience only minor soreness, primarily in two areas: where the local anesthetic was administered and where a small incision was made in the gum tissue. The site of the local anesthetic injection may feel tender for a day or two, while the gum tissue where the incision was made heals quickly due to its rich blood supply. In fact, many patients find that dental implant placement is less uncomfortable than a tooth extraction!
Post-surgical discomfort is usually caused by inflammation. To minimize soreness, follow these tips:
The healing process for dental implants involves two main phases: the initial placement of the implant and the integration with the bone, followed by the attachment of the final restoration, such as a crown, bridge, or denture. This process typically spans 3–6 months. During this time, Dr. Sutton will work closely with you to ensure that you are comfortable and have temporary solutions to avoid missing teeth.
If you’re considering dental implants, it’s important to consult with an experienced implant dentist.
