Sedation Dentistry

Sedation dental care for patients at Santa Rosa Dentistry and Implant Center

Dental anxiety is common in patients of all genders and ages. For some patients, it is a fear of someone in their personal space, and for others, it stems from a past negative experience in the dental chair. Regardless, the team at Santa Rosa Dentistry and Implant Center of Santa Rosa, California, encourages patients to call the office to schedule an appointment and learn about sedation dental care options. By integrating sedation dentistry into patient’s appointment, they can feel at ease and have dental work done without fear. Dr. Wayne Sutton and his team are pleased to offer three primary methods of sedation and relaxation to make patients comfortable from start to finish!

What is sedation dentistry?

Any dental work completed under sedation is called “sedation dentistry.” With sedation dental care, patients pair a sedative with their dental work. Dr. Wayne Sutton and his team at Santa Rosa Dentistry and Implant Center offer various types of sedation that can be used for patients with mild to severe anxiety. They include the following:

  • Nitrous oxide. Nitrous oxide is a safe and popular way for patients with mild to moderate anxiety to address their dental fear for a short period. Nitrous oxide is a special gas that has no smell. It is inhaled by the patient through the nose to almost immediately relax them in the dentist’s chair. It can be reversed with the administration of oxygen, which allows the patient to return to their normal state and leave the office on their own
  • Oral conscious sedation. Oral conscious sedation is another way of combating dental anxiety. This type of sedation requires the patient to take an oral sedative prescribed to them before their appointment. Patients who choose oral conscious sedation must arrange transportation as they cannot drive while the medication is in their system. Patients arrive at the office calm and comfortable and can follow instructions and answer questions from the dentist. The patient returns home to rest and awakens with their dental work complete–and often, with little to no recollection of the visit
  • General anesthetic. For patients who have severe dental anxiety, general anesthesia can be used. We invite an anesthesiologist into the office for the dental procedure to monitor the patient throughout their treatment. This ensures safety from start to finish. Some patients choose to have general anesthesia if they are having extensive dental work done or are spending an extended period in the dentist’s chair
